Fall Adult Bible Study

“My adult Bible study class kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 5 for the first of six weeks of discussion on “The Six Marks of Discipleship,” which is also the focus of my fall sermon series that begins Sunday, Sept. 9. The discussion on Wednesday nights will feature the topic on which I will be preaching the following Sunday, with the exception of Sept. 30, which is Worship Outside the Walls Sunday. On that Sunday, we will all preach the message with our hands and feet – by serving at and beyond our church.

This series draws from a book called Power Surge: Six Marks of Discipleship for a Changing Church, by Michael W. Foss. The book argues for a discipleship model, rather than a membership model, of doing church. Committed discipleship by God’s people releases the power of the Holy Spirit into the mission and ministry of the church. The six marks are not an exhaustive list of all spiritual disciplines that a Christian might practice, but they are foundational practices in which faithful lives are built. On one hand, the practices seem obvious. But far more congregations talk about them than actually practice them.

My class will focus on biblical passages that shed light upon the six practices. Discussion will be about how we go about placing these practices at the center of our personal lives and our corporate lives together as Christ’s Church.”

Here is the adult class schedule for the first six weeks of our fall meetings:

Sept. 5: Pray Daily.

Sept. 12: Worship weekly.

Sept. 19: Read the Bible.

Sept. 26: Serve at and beyond my church.

Oct. 3: Be in relationship to encourage spiritual growth in others.

Oct. 10: Give of my time, talent and resources.
